Kumon China Annual Environmental Report 2021-2022

As the effects of climate change continue to impact our planet, people worldwide have been experiencing severe weather changes — from record-breaking heat waves and extreme rainstorms to powerful winter storms. Energy saving and environmental protection have become the theme words of the new era.

Kumon Group believes that it is our social responsibility and duty to protect the world and prevent environmental problems from worsening. We integrate this environmental philosophy into our business planning and implement relevant education. We are committed to protecting our precious planet and sustaining its natural resources for the present and future generations.

Kumon China (KCN), as a member of the Kumon Group, is establishing different green initiatives for environmental protection. This report presents the green actions we had taken from April 2021 to March 2022 and analyzes the environmental data for 2020 to 2021.

1. Reducing the Electricity Consumption

We know that there’s a direct relationship between our energy use and the environment. If we use less electricity, we can reduce the emission of greenhouse gases released from power plants, protect the earth’s natural resources and preserve the ecosystem.

The KCN Green Team has been raising awareness for environmental protection by motivating employees to conserve energy and sharing green news with them quarterly.

An e-poster on “Green Living Tips – Save Energy” was sent to all staff via email to raise their awareness on environmental protection.

Inside the warehouses of Kumon Beijing Trading (KBT), light bulbs had also been replaced with energy-efficient bulbs phase by phase. The use of energy efficient lighting has effectively reduced electricity consumption and saved energy.

It is found that the electricity consumption of KCN reduced from 199,545 kWh in 2020 to 196,784 kWh in 2021, totally saving 2,761 kwh.

2. Building Paperless Workplaces

With the advancement of information technology, KCN associates are used to doing most of their work online which helps to reduce paper usage.

In the Guangzhou office, our associates have been encouraging all instructors to complete an online feedback form via QR code at the end of lectures and trainings. It has helped to advocate for a paperless workplace and has been an efficient way to gather and analyze information.

By taking different green actions, the paper usage of KCN decreased from 441,758 sheets in the Year 2020 to 410,348 sheets in the Year 2021.

3. Advocating Paper Recycling

KCN, as a business organization, inevitably generates a lot of print materials in the daily operation of offices and warehouses. KCN associates have been participating in paper recycling actively, such as placing paper recycling boxes to collect single-sided printouts and leveraging double-sided printing.

Besides, KCN’s Regional Headquarters and Kumon Hong Kong have put paper recycling bags near the printing area. All the recycled paper is collected by a professional green recycling company. This is a responsible way to execute our green initiatives.

We are pleased to report that KCN recycled 2,076 kg of paper in 2021.

Paper recycling bags are put near the printing area.

4. Planting in Workplaces
Growing plants can help to improve air quality, manage humidity, minimize CO2 emissions, and reduce indoor temperature. Potted plants can improve our working environment at a low cost. We believe that having small desk plants is a great starting point to creating a greener office environment.

At the Beijing Logistics Centre and the Guangzhou office, we have placed different kinds of plants in the common areas. In addition to that, a desk plant has been placed on every desk for all employees to improve indoor air quality in the Guangzhou office. In 2021, KCN recorded 146 tons of CO2 emissions.

Even a small green action can have a huge impact in the long run. As a member of the Kumon Group, KCN will continue to work together and implement different green initiatives to protect our environment. Creating a sustainable environment together is our social responsibility.
